Nautilus Homes Earns 4 Spots on the “Moderns that Matter: The Sarasota 100” List

At Nautilus Homes, we’re proud to have contributed to four iconic residences featured in “Moderns That Matter: The Sarasota 100” list, organized by Architecture Sarasota. These landmarks embody Sarasota’s architectural character and unique identity, enriching its cultural and historical fabric. We played a significant role in constructing and renovating these private residences, including a historic bungalow in Burns Court and the Pavilion House by William Rupp.

According to Morris (Marty) Hylton III, the president of Architecture Sarasota, the “Moderns That Matter” initiative urges us to reflect on Sarasota’s past and future. The Sarasota 100, representing a century of heritage, guides Architecture Sarasota’s efforts.

Ryan Perrone, the co-founder and president of Nautilus Homes, as well as the vice-president of Architecture Sarasota, reflects on the privilege of participating in these iconic projects and Nautilus’ significant role in shaping Sarasota’s landscape and character.

“As a builder deeply rooted in Sarasota’s architectural legacy, Nautilus Homes is honored to have contributed to the fabric of our region through our involvement in these iconic residences,” says Perrone.

“We recognize the privilege and responsibility we hold in shaping the landscape and character of Sarasota. It’s a role we don’t take lightly. In the early days of Nautilus Homes, I was presented with a lucrative job offer that didn’t align with our vision for Sarasota’s architectural identity. I made the decision to turn it down, and that choice has been paramount in our commitment to building with integrity. Each project we undertake is a testament to our dedication to preserving and enhancing Sarasota’s unique charm and heritage.”

The Four Selected Homes Include:

The Sarasota Modern [ New Construction ]

Situated on a narrow waterfront property on Siesta Key, The Sarasota Modern draws inspiration from Japanese culture, offering an understated appearance with exceptional quality. The design prioritizes simplicity of form and materials while addressing site and climate challenges. Two interconnected pavilions float above the tropical landscape, with the main pavilion facing the water and the guest pavilion featuring an internal courtyard with a lap pool. Our strategically designed architectural elements, like shading screens and nested windows, enhance the minimalist aesthetic and adapt to the subtropical climate. This project has garnered several awards, including the 2024 AIA Florida Gulf Coast Honor Award of Excellence for Interiors; 2024 AIA Florida Gulf Coast Merit Award of Excellence for New Work; 2023 AIA Florida/Caribbean Merit Award of Excellence for New Work; and 2023 AIA Florida/Caribbean Merit Award of Excellence for Interiors among other awards and accolades.

Burns Court Bungalow [ Complete Renovation ]

Nautilus transformed a historic bungalow in Burns Court for a client with a passion for history and style, inspired by destinations like Tuscany. With a focus on maintaining historical integrity, the team crafted a functional, 21st-century dream home. They maximized space, utilizing original elements where possible, such as upcycled doors and hardware. The renovation included new Loewen aluminum-clad wood windows, a redesigned kitchen, concealed master wardrobe, revamped master bath, courtyard walls, and refurbished interior trims and doors. Walls and ceilings received a level 5 finish.

The Courtyard House [ Complete Renovation + Hardscape ]

The Courtyard House underwent a full interior and exterior renovation, including hardscape. Originally a classic Sarasota School of Architecture, Jack West home, it was designed for a waterfront subdivision on Bird Key, offering a serene escape from everyday life. In 2019, Echt Architects redesigned architectural façade elements to enhance the tranquil ambiance. Earthy vertical wooden battens lead to a calming water feature at the front entry, fostering a Zen experience. In the backyard, a seamlessly integrated pool complements the space, evoking the sands of Siesta Key beach against the Gulf waves. A built-in fire pit and outdoor dining area provide warmth and leisurely outdoor entertainment. Nautilus preserved the home’s historic intent and craftsmanship while enhancing its modern serenity.

The Pavilion House [ Interior Renovation + Hardscape ]

Even after sixty years, the Pavilion House, a masterpiece crafted by William Rupp, continues to serve as a definitive case study in tropical modern design. Nautilus proudly undertook a full interior and hardscape renovation of this iconic residence. Through meticulous craftsmanship and thoughtful design, we ensured that the essence of its timeless appeal was not only preserved but enhanced for generations to come.
